Venice Film Festival in turmoil

ROME -- The Venice Film Festival is in turmoil with powerplay now underway that will determine whether artistic director Marco Mueller remains at the helm. Venice Biennale prexy Paolo Baratta was reupped Thursday by Italy's newly installed post-Berlusconi government, leaving large sectors of the local film industry wondering whether Baratta will overlook frictions with Mueller, resolve their differences, and opt to continue their collaboration; or instead look for a new Lido topper. Those frictions center around the Lido's infrastructural woes, with the venerable fest's planned new Palazzo del Cinema in recent years turning into an open-air construction site, making its grounds akin to civil-war-era Beirut, plus exorbitant hotel costs, and overall lack of accommodation. All matters on which Mueller wants more oversight. Meanwhile, according to sources, new Italo Culture Czar Lorenzo Ornaghi, shortly after reupping Baratta, has contacted Mueller, opening informal negotiations. But Baratta, who is now emboldened by his reappointment, is not expected to be willing to cede much ground. Baratta's mandate will not kick in formally until early January, when a decision must be made. Consensus in the Italo industry is that Mueller is not just the best man for the job, due to his standing within the international industry and vast web of contacts, but also that he is quite crucial for Venice not to sink. Mueller's prestige is seen as the best way to counterbalance the fest's infrastructural deficiencies, which will certainly not be resolved by its next edition, in September 2012. Mueller, who has offers on the table from fests in Russia, Japan, and also from the Rome Film Festival, seems keen to stay at Venice, but is also determined to be able to cater more directly to industry needs. ABC, however, will air four special episodes after its current ninth season ends its run on Jan. 13 with its 200th episode. The series, which features host Ty Pennington and a team including designer Michael Moloney visiting and rebuilding the homes of families in need, premiered in 2003 as a 13-part special to 12 million viewers on a Wednesday night, moving to its initial home on Sundays where it became a regular staple for its first eight seasons. The Extreme Makeover spinoff continued to grow, cracking the top 20 in viewership in its second season, averaging 15.8 million viewers per episode as it made its way to visit all 50 states helping veterans, victims of natural disasters, the homeless and foster care and adoption organizations. To date, the team has designed and rebuilt more than 200 homes, in addition to firehouses, schools, daycares and more. ABC moved the series to Fridays this year where it has struggled to attract the same audience -- despite a slate of high-profile guests including first lady Michelle Obama and the Kardashians -- against competition including Fox's Kitchen Nightmares and scripted offerings including A Gifted Man. Its most recent episode, airing against CBS' holiday broadcast of Frosty the Snowman (7.3 million), drew 5.1 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. The decision to air four specials follows a similar model Fox incorporated for America's Most Wanted. The long-running law-enforcement series, hosted by John Walsh, was canceled as a weekly series in May with Fox opting to air four quarterly specials. (Lifetime has since picked up the series for a 25th season.) "It is with a somber heart I close this chapter, but with such excitement I begin the next one," Moloney said in a statement to THR. "I have EM:HE to thank for the platform I have to continue doing good work and great design in 2012 and on." Pennington, meanwhile, has already lined up a new gig, ABC's upcoming daytime health and lifestyle series The Revolution, set to premiere in January. He joins Tim Gunn and Harley Pasternak. Pennington later posted a statement on his Web site thanking the network, fans and those associated with the show for their support for what he called "the greatest job of my life." "I believe the spirit of what we have done across the country for over 200 families will continue to inspire," he wrote. It has been an honor to work side by side with the EMHE families, builders, and thousands of volunteers who have proven that good hearts can and do change the world." Watercooler: Warehouse 13's Finest Gift

Allison Scagliotti, Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly You realize, it truly is an excellent existence when you are getting to enjoy in Warehouse 13. Because we have apparently all been good boys and women this season, Syfy last evening unwrapped its annual batch of Christmas-designed episodes in the net's holy trinity - W13, Haven and Eureka. From the three goodies, Watercooler was most impressed by Warehouse's fresh, cheeky method of among television's earliest, and frequently moldiest tropes: The spoof of It is a Wonderful Existence. Usually presented like a sappy "despondent character sees exactly what the world could be like without oneInch tale, the authors rather offered up laughs having a periodic flavor by literally sweeping perpetual optimist Pete from existence following a run-along with a mystical brush once possessed by Philip Van Doren Stern. Stern, for that Yule-challenged among you, composed the novel The Finest Gift, which offered because the inspiration for, you first got it, It is a Wonderful Existence. This twist of getting Pete stuck inside a timeline where none of his charms (and they're copious, because of Eddie McClintock's large-kid likeability) could convince his pals he was legitimate permitted just for fun tweaks throughout. We've got a callback towards the earlier, less Lattimer-loose Myka. A psych ward-dwelling Claudia. An Artie who had been imprisoned for any bungled bloodstone save. And on top of that, the return of Roger Rees as baddie MacPherson, who had been not only still alive, but grinchier than ever before. Between his recently empowered villainy and also the formidable threat to Mrs. Frederic he posed, could it be past too far to include "resurrect MacPherson permanently once the show resumes" to the wish list, Santa? Obviously, all is made merry and vibrant through the finish, so our crew was reunited before the closing credits. And that we wouldn't get it every other way. After three seasons, in addition to this wonderful outing, you do not need the sunshine of Rudolph's nose to determine that W13 ensemble simply stands out when they're together. Have you sign in to Warehouse 13 last evening? Maybe it was the gift that continues giving for you personally, too? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine today!

Tilda Swinton on We Need to Talk About Kevin, the Joys of Chaos, and What 'Indie' Means Today

Another year, another blisteringly grand performance from Tilda Swinton: After a run that commenced with her Oscar-winning role in Michael Clayton and continued with her underseen creative triumphs Julia and I Am Love, Swinton arrives in theaters next week as the haunted lead in We Need to Talk About Kevin. If there is any justice in the Oscar cosmos, she’ll be back in the Kodak Theater as at least a nominee come February. Of course, that cosmos knows little justice, and anyway, that’s not why Swinton is in the business. “I don’t choose roles; I choose people,” she said at a recent guild screening of Kevin in NY City — a reference to her friend Lynne Ramsay, the brilliant filmmaker behind Ratcatcher (1999) and Morvern Callar (2002) who makes her return to directing after nearly a decade away. Along with Rory Kinnear, Ramsay adapted Lionel Shriver’s epistolary novel about Eva Katchadourian (Swinton), an erstwhile travel writer who settles down to motherhood despite her acute unease with the concept. Her pregnancy yields Kevin, the raven-haired baddest of bad seeds who reflects back to Eva every dark apprehension under which he was conceived. When, as a teenager (played by a smoldering Ezra Miller), he commits an unthinkable crime, Eva is left to face the consequences alone as the community’s most notorious pariah. Swinton and I caught up yesterday in NY City, a day after the actress-producer-artist presented the Gotham Awards’ Best Feature prize and at the start of another week of appearances geared to stir much-needed (and much-deserved) word of mouth about We Need to Talk About Kevin. (The film opens Dec. 9 in limited release and will roll out nationally through the winter.) How were the Gothams last night? They were a blur, but they were fun. They were great. I’d never been before. Really? First time! It’s funny, because to announce something like a tie between The Tree of Life and Beginners, were you thinking, “These are indies?” Or is “indie film” just a matter of semantics now? It all gets lost in translation. I have no idea what “indie” means now. I certainly don’t know what it means here. I really don’t. It means something different every decade, I think. There was a time when it didn’t have a capital “I,” and now it does. Now it has award shows. It has studio backing a lot of the time. So I myself am bemused, but I’m a little bit of a Rip Van Winkle when it comes to “indie.” The roots of it were different anyway in Europe than in America. So I really don’t know. As the co-producer of We Need to Talk About Kevin, would you call this an indie? Well, you could say that’s it’s not an indie because it received money from BBC Films. But then you could also say it’s an indie because the hard core of the people who made it worked on it unpaid for several years. It didn’t have development finance. You could say that that qualifies a film as independent. I mean, we all wish we were Stanley Kubrick, working on something for over a decade, funded by Warner Bros. I would love that. But when you’re working on a film like I Am Love for a dozen years on a song and a prayer, that feels really indie. A lot of the time it feels like you’re pissing in the wind. It depends on your distribution as well — how your film is actually seen. The first American independent film I made — with David Siegel and Scott McGehee — interestingly enough, I remember after it was released someone came up to me and asked, “Is this the first Hollywood movie you’ve ever made?” And that was a credit-card funded movie — entirely independently put together. But the fact that it was picked up by Fox Searchlight and given a really nice release gave it a different kind of patina. So your independence is a color that can either be thrown out of you, or it can be thrown on you by a gel and a light. I talk to more and more actors who go into producing who seem to actually resent discussing that side of the job — as if it compromises the art. What’s your relationship with it? To be honest with you, that’s the territory of the bulk of the last 25 years of my life. I’ve spent much more time putting projects together with filmmakers than performing. Performing and actually shooting is just a thumbnail compared to the whole body of what production is. So no — I have no sense of resentment at all. In fact, I think that’s the science of it. Honestly, that’s the bit of it I’m particularly interested in. I’m more interested in it. A few weeks ago, I was at a guild screening of Kevin where you spoke about having finally made Julia, I Am Love and We Need to Talk About Kevin after collective years of struggle. And you compared that having a farm that you were watching grow for a while, and when you harvested it, that’d be it for a while. We’ve had the harvest. It’s grown! Now it’s time to maybe sow something else. But the field is fallow. It sounded like you were planning a break. How long a break are we talking about — if it happens? A break from what, is the question. I hope there will be a break from going out in public. [Laughs] And hopefully a break from talking for a while. But there are other seeds being planted now; it just depends how long they take to come up. They might take as little as two years, or they might take as much as 10. Don’t know. But people do — pardon the pun — need to talk about Kevin. There is lot to discuss here. It’s helpful if they see it first! But it’s all good. Starting at Cannes and moving forward to today, having heard the conversations about it yet being as close to it as you’ve been over the years, how has that chatter affected your own perception of the film — if at all? This is not a new conception, because it’s in many ways what we set out to do — it’s a relief that I notice this. But sometimes you have an intention — the best one in the world — but the film is a beast of its own, and it ends up doing something different. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; very often it can be better than you intended. But in this case, I really feel that the film is about and was intended to be about a person’s mind. That’s what it’s about — a human consciousness. It’s about memory, it’s about guilt, it’s about isolation and fantasy. It’s much more about that than it is about any of the events that we see or are referred to. It’s partly about the psyche she shares with Kevin, right? Who knows how much of it is what we call “true”? It could all really be a hallucination. The last few times I’ve seen it, I viewed it through that prism. That’s really useful — that’s a really good ride. I recommend that trip. If you go to the film expecting social commentary or expecting some kind of thriller that relies in a kind of reliable territory, then you might be disappointed. You might be unsatisfied. It’s not a conventional enough film to satisfy the tropes of a genre. It’s not a genre film at all. I think it’s truly radical in that sense. If you go expecting to do that “thing” — cinema being the great empathy machine that it is — to just go into somebody else shoes and wallow in their experience and limit yourself to that, to relax into that, then I think that’s the most valuable thing the film can offer. It’s also about the American psyche — something that you and Lynne had to approach as outsiders. How did that go? We had a discussion about that. When we were putting the film together, there was a moment when, money being what it is… Money tends to bring its own color with it sometimes, its national color or a kind of agenda, and there was a moment when — because the film is largely funded by British money — there was a question about whether it really need to be shot in America, or whether it even needed to be an American story. It was very quick business for us — the central core of Lynne, Rory and me — to know that it had to be. And that in itself begs the question of why? I’m not really clear on why, apart from the fact that — having said that it’s not social commentary — it is about a kind of atmosphere. And while the atmosphere it evokes isn’t exclusively about America — I mean, let’s face it: America is incredibly good at exporting its cultural atmosphere to most the rest of the world — there was something simpler about placing it where it was set in NY. It felt clean. And because we were dealing with sort-of clean elements, because our budget was what it was, and we had to pare it down into this Greek tragedy of a few protagonists and a chorus of kids outside a high school and no other society. You never go into the school. You never see any life with friends. You don’t get any back story of Franklin’s family or Eva’s family, which you do in the book. Because we were so pared down, we needed to be that straight-up.

Music Label Sues Demanding '50/50' Distributors Change Title

Chris Helcermanas-Benge/Summit Entertainment A Florida-based music and fashion label is suing Lionsgate, Summit Entertainment, and Mandate Pictures for infringing its trademark on the title of the film, 50/50, starringJoseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.our editor recommends'50/50's' Seth Rogen Weds in Sonoma'50/50': What Moviegoers Are Saying About the Cancer Comedy'50/50's' Seth Rogen Reveals 'Most Challenging' Part of Filming (Video)'50/50': How Joseph Gordon-Levitt Signed on Cancer Comedy at Eleventh Hour (Video) Eastland Music Group filed the federal lawsuit on Thursday in Illinois and says it has been using the 50/50 mark since 2000 in connection with entertainment services and products. As evidence, the plaintiff points to its website,phifty-50.com, which currently has a sign post on its front page adorned with "50/50." A screenshot from five years ago, however, suggests that the sign may have been changed at some point. In 2006, for example, the sign post read, "Phifty 50." Nevertheless, Eastland says it has a trademark on "Phifty-50" and a common law trademark on "50/50," meaning that the latter was never formally registered but potentially still recognized as intellectual property if it was used continuously during that time. The company says it puts out CDs and DVDs and alleges that Lionsgate's plans to release the film on DVD threatens to harm the recognition and goodwill its marks have earned in the marketplace. Eastland notes that it sent a request to Lionsgate to stop using the 50/50 mark in September. The 50/50 film was released later that month by Summit, and the comedy about a man trying to beat his cancer diagnosis earned excellent reviews. The movie has so far grossed nearly $34 million at the box office and is considered a long-shot sleeper for an Oscar nomination. But the title is allegedly causing consumer confusion, so Eastland is demanding a permanent injunction against use of the title, the destruction of all products where "50-50" is affixed, and an award of all of the film's sales and revenues as a result of the alleged infringement. Custom Bellflower Medusa Car Can Be Yours to Drive Around the Apocalypse For Just $250,000

After you watch the horrific repercussions of Twilight’s sweet, placenta-chomping vampire romance this weekend, check out the indie drama Bellflower, one of the year’s more vivid and gut-wrenching examinations of the more painful side of love. You think delivering a monster baby is stressful, Bella Swan? Just see what happens to poor Woodrow (writer-director Evan Glodell) in the aftermath of puppy love. At least he’s got the kick-ass, flame-throwing, apocalypse-ready Medusa car to ride around in… which can be yours, Bellflower fans, for just a few (thousand — OK, many thousands of) bucks! I raved about Bellflower earlier this year, but since it only opened in limited release opportunities to see it were scarce. The micro-budgeted flick is available as of this week on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD, so no more excuses! Okay, the real reason I’m posting this: Over at the official website of Coatwolf Productions, the Bellflower crew’s got a special item for sale. YOU CAN HAVE YOUR VERY OWN MEDUSA CAR. WHICH SHOOTS FLAMES AND IS GENERALLY THE MOST BADASS CAR IMAGINABLE. And only for $250,000! (Someone buy this for me, yes? Heck, with that much money the Bellflower crew could make over a dozen more Bellflowers!) As described by Glodell: If you give us $250,000 — Myself, Paul Edwardson and the entire Coatwolf team will drop whatever we are doing for a month and go crazy building you a badass post-apocalyptic, fire breathing, battle ready Medusa Car. We will even cover the legal fees to make sure we can deliver it to you without getting arrested. Glodell, whose Bellflower getup made for an amazing if obscure movie-referencing costume this past Halloween, also posted a new alternate trailer for the film, shot this past summer, which beautifully encapsulates what the movie’s about. Watch it below and look for Bellflower on home vid this weekend, if you’re in the mood for an incredibly visceral (and gorgeously-shot, on a shoestring budget) few hours that’ll cut your heart all the way open — in the best possible way, of course. King Curling (Kong Curling)

A Euforia Film relieve a 4 1/2 Film presentation. (Worldwide sales: NonStop Sales, Stockholm.) Produced by Hakon Overas. Executive producer, Lars Andreas Hellebust. Directed by Ole Endresen. Script, Endresen, Atle Antonsen. With: Atle Antonsen, Linn Skaber, Ane Dahl Torp, Kare Conradi, Jon Oigarden, Steinar Sagen, Jan Saelid, Anne Marit Jacobsen, Ingar Helge Gimle, Magnus Devold, Else Kass Furuseth, Harald Eia, Bard Tufte Johansen. (Norwegian, British dialogue)Doing for your ice-rink-based sport of curling what "Kingpin" did for bowling or "Dodgeball" did for ... er, dodgeball, raucous Norwegian laffer "King Curling" reps a amusing undertake the mock-heroic sporting-underdog genre. Pic throws a spotlight mainly on massive local comedy star Atle Antonsen, who co-written and stars just like a champion who must overcome odds to win an essential match, but co-author-helmer Ole Endresen guarantees the comfort of his skilled cast all obtain the chance to achieve laughs. Produced using professional polish, pic is funny enough, during translation, to go to beyond Norwegian, where it's setup high B.O. amounts. Early action is positioned about 10 years ago, even though combination of seventies and eighties styles and soundtrack options confuse the issue somewhat. Oslo native Truls Paulsen (Antonsen) might be the obsessively competitive captain of Norway's top curling team, a task that (for people who is probably not of Scottish, Canadian or Scandinavian extraction) seems just like a mix between bowling and darts. Truls' team includes ladies' guy Marcus (Jon Oigarden), inflammed Espen (Jan Saelid) and workhorse Flemming (Steinar Sagen), along with Truls' long-term mentor, Gordon (Ingar Helge Gimle), since the team coach, and Truls' wife, Sigrid (Linn Skaber), since the team's one-lady entourage. Sadly, due to obsessive-compulsive habits, Truls totally handles to get rid of it within a match against afro-sporting archrival Stefan Ravndal (Kare Conradi) and also the team, and finally eventually ends up trading 10 years in the mental hospital drugged around his eyeballs. When he's finally released into Sigrid's care, he struggles to reintegrate into society, especially since he's under strict orders not to even consider curling again. However, if he learns that Gordon is dying in the hospital and merely an pricey lung transplant will save you him, Truls decides to reform they for starters last, lucrative match. Script absolutely changes for the traditional loser-to-champion story template, but as being a sonnet or possibly a 3-minute pop song, structural originality is not the reason it's all regulated controlled inside the particulars, the running gags as well as the timing. Pic deftly weaves in subplots together with additional factors -- Espen's frustrations getting a loud milkman, a support group comprised of loonies, some misadventures with bird-audiences -- that stimulate Antonsen and Endresen's roots in TV sketch comedy, similar to the stylishly staged bouts of slapstick, just like a one-take monitoring shot of Truls leading to havoc in the hospital corridor. Otherwise, the humor relies mainly on bathetic campiness, the figures intoning sentiments with greatly serious gravitas in regards to the naturally silly-searching sport they worship. Consequently, handful of in the lines are funny on paper it's the way a thesps deliver these with such intensely straight faces that puts the material across. The ensemble is also excellent Antonsen, strapping but perfectly regular to check out, can be a standout, along with Skaber, both perky and menacing as his frustrated, slightly demented spouse. Production design and costumes deploy the palette of hot pastels and lurid colors needed to stimulate the very best quantity of Nordic kitsch. Lensing by Askild Vik Edvardsen utilizes widescreen framework to full comic effect, while editing by Per Erik Eriksen keeps things ticking fantastically.Camera (color, widescreen), Askild Vik Edvardsen editor, Per Erik Eriksen music, Stein Johan Grieg Halvorsen, Eyvind Andreas Skeie music managers, Henrik Hawor, Johan Husvik production designer, Merete Bostrom costume designer, Camilla Lindblom appear (Dolby Digital), Kenneth Gustavsen appear designer, Baard Haugan Ingebretsen supervisory appear editor, Baard H. Sinclair buys Freedom stations for $385 mil

The price is right for Sinclair Broadcast Group to get back into station acquisition mode. The company on Wednesday unveiled a deal to buy eight mid-sized market TV stations from Irvine-based Freedom Communications for $385 million. Sinclair's pact with Freedom comes on the heels of its $200 million deal inked last month to buy seven stations from Four Points Media, an affiliate of private equity giant Cerberus Capital Management. The Freedom and Four Points acquisitions were attractive to Sinclair because the station were available at a relatively low price and they will boost the company's market share by giving it multiple stations in markets including West Palm Beach, Fla., and Albany, N.Y., according to Sinclair chief financial officer David Amy. Although local stations in small- and mid-sized markets have been through a rough few years amid broader economic turmoil, Sinclair remains bullish on broadcast -- as to be expected from one of the nation's largest station owners. Amy said the additions of the Freedom and Four Points stations would drive 40% growth in the company's free cash flow. Sinclair is known for its skill at squeezing top profit margins out of its stations, especially in markets where it owns more than one. Baltimore-based Sinclair stayed mostly on the sidelines about five years ago when private equity players like Cerberus began snapping up TV stations at much higher multiples than Sinclair is paying now. "It didn't make sense for us to go out and compete against the private equity guys. We said at the time, 'Wait five years, you'll see us acquiring again.' " Freedom's sale of its broadcast properties had been expected after the company completed its bankruptcy reorg last year. Freedom owns 27 daily newspapers, including the Orange County Register, among other print and digital publications. The other Freedom markets are Chattanooga, Tenn., Medford, Ore., Beaumont, Texas and Grand Rapids and Lansing, Mich. Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.com

Wall Street Analysts' Outlook for UltraViolet Is Mixed

NY - With Warner Bros.' home theatre relieve Horrible Bosses Tuesday, Hollywood art galleries and tech firms started their extended-spoken about UltraViolet platform, which allows clients utilization of movies they own across a slew of items utilizing a digital locker.our editor recommendsConsortium of Art galleries, Producers Throws Weight Behind UltraViolet Management SystemUltraviolet Launches Certification Program Leading to Digital Locker inside the Cloud Wall Street experts on Tuesday stated options in the cloud storage system, particularly for stimulating the Hollywood art galleries' home theatre business, but furthermore layed out its current shortfalls, particularly inadequacies in participation from Wally Disney and Apple. "Can UltraViolet Shine A Simple on Having Movies Again?" Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne asked for in the report. "We view the's UltraViolet initiative just like a critical, although certainly challenging, advance because of the chance of greater adoption of high-margin electronic sell-through and slowing down lower the client migration from purchase transactions toward lower-margin rental shops," he mentioned. "If UltraViolet can drive clients to think about a cloud-based film possession model inside a material way, stocks that have material studio assets may very well see greater earnings and multiple expansion." In the bull situation scenario he defined, UltraViolet could drive about ten percent upside to film art galleries' earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Because scenario, films bought rather than leased per household could rise to greater than seven every year by 2015 from an thought 6.8 this year. "If UltraViolet has the ability to drive film buying habits to 2004 levels - more than 12 films bought per household yearly - the upside might be elevated,Inch Swinburne mentioned. Nevertheless the analyst also layed out key challenges. "Disney and Apple stay with the sidelines, controlling universal adoption," Swinburne mentioned. "Disney presently expects to produce its own version from the "digital locker" referred to as Disney Studio All Access that employs another extension than UltraViolet's Common Extension, which causes it to be a difficulty on clients to obtain their UltraViolet films and Disney films in the same position. In . For the moment, it's beginning, with the start of 2012 potentially getting another incentive for clients. "We expect legal-copy upload capacity (enabling clients to upload current DVD inventory into the cloud) to begin moving through the first quarter 2012, potentially spurring new purchase activity," Swinburne mentioned. Burns Tabak analyst David Joyce also mentioned it absolutely was too early to calculate the impact of UltraViolet. "The big question for you is how can the client like whatever cost points emerge and the way cannibalistic might it become for future platform releases and growth," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "I am hopeful the danger and chance will probably be balanced" though, he added. The key factor question will probably be whether a studio will have a way to charge a larger price of, say, $30 let us concentrate on anyone to obtain access to a little of content in perpetuity instead of getting less money plus another $20 five years from let us concentrate on a completely new device. While lauding art galleries for searching at digital options, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield was particularly bearish about UltraViolet, highlighting it doesn't use iTunes and doesn't easily use Apple items. "When we are skeptical that anything can reinvigorate buying home theatre beyond drastically reducing prices points (in compliance with rental), forcing clients to use your infrastructure versus theinfrastructurethey are cozy with requires a "complete" solution, the UltraViolet-ecosystem isn't today," he mentioned in the blog publish. "Continue UltraViolet just before it being ready for prime-time risks pushing clients progressively toward rental listed options where they don't have to deal with the issues of possession and, worse, piracy." CBS Films Amy Baer Exiting As President And CEO As Focus Shifts To Acquisitions

UPDATE: Les Moonves has just released a statement on the exit of Amy Baer from CBS Films: We thank Amy for her important role in building CBS Films. Going forward, we remain fully committed to the divisions focus on a targeted slate of smart acquisitions and quality homegrown productions in all genres. CBS Films is small in the overall size and scope of our company, but continues to fit nicely with the Corporation’s premium content strategy. Were excited about its future and to start its next chapter. EXCLUSIVE, 2:57 PM: Amy Baer will transition out of the post of president and CEO of CBS Films, ending her four-year tenure at the start-up production/distribution company in late October. Baer will immediately join Laurence Mark as producer of the Jon Turteltaub-directed Last Vegas, CBS Films’ Dan Fogelman-scripted comedy that revolves around four best friends in their late 60s who decide to escape retirement and throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who stayed single. Baer confirmed her exit to me just now, and said that it came after two months of discussion with CBS chief Les Moonves. CBS Films has been his baby, and Baer said that with the focus switching to acquisitions — CBS Films made the biggest deal of the 2011 Toronto Film Festival when it acquired the Lasse Hallstrom-directed Salmon Fishing In The Yemen for north of $5 million — it seemed a good time for Baer to move on and focus on the kinds of mid-budget movies she likes most. She sparked to jumping in as producer but would not rule out a return as an executive. Before launching CBS Films, she spent 17 years as an executive at Sony Pictures. The CBS Films structure might change somewhat, but Wolfgang Hammer continues to be COO, with Scott Shooman is head of acquisitions, Steven Friedlander head of distribution and Terry Press continuing as marketing consultant. How Baer is replaced to generate in-house productions will be worked out soon. “This has been an amazing experience,” she said. “How many people get to start a distribution company from scratch? It’s not something I ever could have done at Sony, as much as I loved the people there. Leslie has been great to work with, but as this evolved with acquisitions a bigger piece of what we’re doing, I just felt like following my heart, which is making mid-range studio films. That was and continues to be my forte.” Baer said that was reinforced when she attended the premiere of Moneyball, a book she brought in while she was an executive at Sony Pictures and supervised hits that included My Best Friend’s Wedding. CBS Films’ performance has had its growing pains. The division got out of the gate slowly with the medical drama Extraordinary Measures, which starred Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser and didn’t perform at the box office. Baer said she felt that the company’s high profile shone an unfair light on a company that needed to build both a production and distribution infrastructure. “The bottom line was, our second release, The Back-Up Plan, grossed $80 million worldwide and was a success, and we got no credit for it, or for casting Melissa McCarthy before she was even on her CBS show Mike & Molly,” Baer said. “Faster was a very successful DVD title, and Beastly was a little gem we spent very little to market, compared to how it did at the domestic box office and on home video. We went from nothing and ran smack into the writers’ strike, and when you are building a distribution company, there will always be hiccups. We have a great team now and I’m proud of where the company is going.” Besides Last Vegas, CBS Films has several projects nearly ready to start production. That includes the adaptation of the Vince Flynn bestseller American Assassin, which Ed Zwick is directing and casting. The supernatural thriller 7500 will begin shooting in late October, and the division is looking for a director on Hellfest. Acquisitions will continue to be a priority for CBS Films, which started in that direction with the remake The Mechanic and has become an aggressive player for finished films that can play in wide release.

Toronto 2011: Buyers Circling Horror Pic 'You're Next'

our editor recommendsBERLIN: Home Invasion Thriller 'You're Next' Being Touted at EFMToronto 2011: 10 Hot Titles Buyers Dare Not MissToronto 2011: 50 Cent's 'All Things Fall Apart' Acquired by Image Entertainment (Exclusive)Toronto Film Festival: 13 Films to KnowRelated Topics•Toronto International Fil... The question isn't how good the suspense thriller You're Next is, but how quickly will it get scooped up? The horror thriller directed by Adam Wingard had its Toronto premiere Saturday night, playing before a crowd that at times pressed against the seats in suspense, tensely gripped handles, laughed, and cheered when someone bit the dust in a magnificent fashion. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival 2011: 13 Films to Know But the real action took place in the lobby and outside the doors of the Ryerson Theatre, where Lionsgate executives, including chief Joe Drake, huddled on one side, while Summit's Erik Feig paced like a tiger on the other. Weinstein Co. and CBS Films execs were seen on phones, and this being at 2:30 AM, they likely weren't calling their buddies. The buyer interest in the movies wasn't just high, it bordered on salivation. And why not? The Midnight Madness sidebar is having a very strong showing this year, and You're Next is definitely not your big brother's home invasion movie. This is not an oppressive, bleak slasher pic where there is no hope. No, sir, this movie shows us a brand new heroine in the form of Australian actress Sharni Vinson, whose character-a girlfriend with some astonishing instincts at a family reunion gone horribly bad-had the audience cheering and clapping. THR's Complete Toronto 2011 Coverage Make no mistake, though. This movie is violent and the deaths sometimes gruesome. But it's also intelligent, filled with characters that may not do smart things but they do them honestly. And it has a surprisingly strong amount of humor. This is a rare beast: a horror movie with crowd-pleasing potential. Wingard said during the movie's post-screening Q&A that he wanted to make a Midnight Madness movie after last year's TIFF showing of his A Horrible Way to Die, and his inspiration came from the opening sequence of 1995's Scream, which saw Drew Barrymore face off against a ghost-faced killer in her house. Winard turned to his Horrible Way writer to pen the script. Wingard used many of his previous actors in the film but had trouble casting the lead. He said the actresses were posing too much, acting tough from the get-go. Not only did it give things away too much and too soon, it wasn't believable. Then came Vinson. "She had a subtlety to her," he said. While the more prestigious movies at TIFF are drawing mostly mixed reactions from acquisition execs, this low-budget horror movie, which producer Keith Calder said reminded him of "Home Alone as a horror movie," is generating considerable heat, judging by the late-night conversations and buzz. The next TIFF acquisition just may be You're Next. Related Topics Toronto International Film Festival

Keck's Exclusives: Ellen Pompeo is Ready for More Grey's Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo Guess what, ABC? A year and a half after she said she would "finish the show when my contract is up," Ellen Pompeo is open to continuing as Grey's Anatomy's Meredith. Just one problem: "I was invited for eight years - that was my contract - and no one has asked me for a day more," she says. "I know [creator] Shonda Rhimes has said the show will continue, but I wouldn't presume that they want to continue with me. You don't get dressed for the party if you don't have an invitation." Assuming ABC does ask her to re-up (and that's a pretty safe assumption), Ellen seems game. "I would love the opportunity to discuss it," she says. "I would never turn up my nose at Grey's. As long as the stories are honest and truthful, and Patrick [Dempsey] and I feel there is material for us to be passionate about, it still beats a 9-to-5 job any day. If I hear from the fans that they want us to keep going, then I would continue because we owe them everything." But of course she's not speaking for Patrick, who may likely exit, along with Sandra Oh (Cristina), to pursue a film career. Surprisingly, Ellen says that wouldn't deter her from continuing Meredith's story. "I have been blessed to work beside Sandra Oh for the past eight years; she's an incredible talent," says Ellen, who feels the same way about Patrick and "all the original cast members who aren't there anymore-T.R. [Knight], Isaiah [Washington], Katie [Heigl]. I didn't think the show could go on without any of them, yet we found a way to do it. It might be an interesting story for Meredith to have to deal with losing Cristina." Rhimes says she has indeed "thought of some scenarios" should Patrick choose to leave while Ellen remains. "I would be lying if I didn't say that I lie awake at night wondering what would happen," she says. "And I have some ideas. Do I love them? I don't know yet. I'd prefer to think of them as Armageddon scenarios. There are no easy answers." Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Why the World is Ready for 2 'Snow Whites'

LOS ANGELES (AP) Moviegoers may want to take two bites of the same apple next year: A pair of live-action adventure flicks based on Snow White will come out in theaters just months apart. As it stands, the first, still-unnamed Snow White movie is scheduled for release March 16. That gives moviegoers two and a half months before "Snow White and the Huntsman" on June 1.Executives are confident that both projects can succeed, given their differences in stars, tone and plot. However bizarre the coincidence is, history shows that two similar projects like these can both attract large audiences. In May 1998, viewers turned out for "Deep Impact," a movie about a comet threatening Earth. They showed up again that July when an asteroid did the same in "Armageddon." ''Deep Impact" sold $349 million in tickets worldwide, and "Armageddon" followed with $555 million.Audiences didn't duck for cover either when "Dante's Peak" blew in February 1997 only to have "Volcano" erupt that April. The first made $169 million and the other $120 million at the box office. The latest standoff pits a couple of "frenemy" studios against each other newbie studio Relativity Media and its longtime distribution partner, Universal Pictures.Since 2005, Relativity had provided financial backing for most of Universal's new movies in a deal that was to last through 2015. But Relativity has been eager to make money from distributing as well, as it did with the March 8 release of "Limitless," which has sold more than $150 million in tickets worldwide. So in June, Relativity passed its co-financing deal with Universal to Relativity's financial backer, Elliott Management. That paved the way for the two studios to compete head to head Relativity with the unnamed movie and Universal with "Huntsman.""Everybody kind of goes into this eyes wide open," said Tucker Tooley, Relativity's president of worldwide production. "It's the nature of competition. It's the nature of this business."Universal executives declined to comment.Executives argue that the two Snow White movies are spaced far enough apart so that advertising one won't inadvertently drive people to the other. Most movies make 95 percent of their sales in the first four weeks. On average, people in North America see four movies a year. There's plenty of time to get refreshed and go out again."Ten weeks in the movie business is a lifetime," said "Huntsman" producer Joe Roth.He should know. Roth was head of Disney's studios when its "Armageddon" opened second but still sold $200 million more in tickets worldwide than "Deep Impact."The casts of both Snow Whites are also distinct enough to merit a return trip to the theater. In Relativity's version, billed as a family comedy, Julia Roberts is in for an intriguing role reversal as the former "Pretty Woman" plays the Evil Queen."She's a very fun and evil and wicked Evil Queen," said producer Bernie Goldmann, who also produced "300." Nathan Lane is set to add a humorous touch as a bumbling Huntsman. In Universal's epic action adventure, Kristen Stewart of "Twilight" fame gets "Karate Kid"-like fight training from buff Chris Hemsworth of "Thor." Hemsworth plays the mercenary Huntsman, who disobeys orders to kill her. The action-packed movie also involves a love triangle with Prince Charmant, played by Sam Claflin."At its heart, it becomes a girl's empowerment movie," Roth said.Timing and casting aside, Snow White is a tale that has been told many times with many different plot twists. These versions follow that tradition. In an early Italian retelling, the good guy we know from Disney's 1937 animated classic as Prince Charming rapes Snow White while she's sleeping, according to Tina Boyer, a professor of German at Wake Forest University. She awakes not to a kiss, but to her baby being born. Another tale has Snow White fleeing her father, not her wicked stepmother, because he'd like to make her his incestuous wife.Relativity's movie has Snow White teaming up with the seven dwarves to fight the Evil Queen. In Universal's, she teams up with the Huntsman to fight back.Reading the 20-plus different versions is partly what inspired Melisa Wallack to write her own take in the script that Relativity later bought, said Goldmann, Wallack's husband."It enabled us to understand that there was a lot of freedom in expanding the story," he said.Evan Daugherty had written the other Snow White script while he was a film student at New York University many years ago. He also takes many liberties with the plot. Universal, now owned by Comcast Corp., bought it following a bidding war.It helped that "Alice in Wonderland" sold $1 billion at the box office last year and revived interest in classic stories that feature young girls and have fallen out of copyright protection.Even if producers of both projects saw success and jumped on the bandwagon, there aren't enough complex roles for young women these days anyway, said Marjorie Rosen, a professor of film and journalism at Lehman College. Having characters as rich as Snow White and the Evil Queen on screen is a blessing, Rosen said, even if there are going to be two versions of them. She said pent-up demand for strong female leads has led to the success of a slew of recent bride movies, from "27 Dresses" and "Bride Wars" to the recent "Bridesmaids.""Women were lining up for the first week or two because they were desperate for movies about them," Rosen said. "Maybe (the studios) are hoping that Snow White is kind of like that but better."And if there's two, why not a third? Word has it that Disney has been working on a live-action remake of its animated classic for the past decade. In that one, Snow White ends up in a forest with seven Shaolin monks. At its core, each iteration is about a dysfunctional family, something that touches everyone at some level. That may be why the story is still relevant today."They can take the basic themes if they want to and go with it because that's what fairytales and folklore are all about," said Wake Forest's Boyer. "They have to be reinvented. That's how they stay alive."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
